Prayer

Prayer is important in the life of a follower of Jesus—some would say the most essential thing.

On the one hand it can seem so basic.  Especially when we are in trouble, prayer can seem our most natural response.  Crying out to God for help when we are afraid or have nowhere else to turn can be as automatic as breathing, or as critical to our soul when we are in trouble as sleep is to our body when we are exhausted.

On the other hand prayer can seem so far beyond us -- so mysterious and ethereal --- prayer is a way of seeking to engage with the Divine -- beyond the physical world and into the spiritual and unseen of which we know so little.

When it comes to prayer in some sense we are all just beginners.  No matter how many years we’ve been praying or following, no matter how many books we’ve read about prayer, no matter how many hours we have spent on our knees pouring our hearts out to God, in the realm of prayer, none of us are experts.

No matter how much we want to change, or how far we have come, we recognize that we are still so far from perfect, and we hold places within us that remain un-surrendered to God.  The good news is that Jesus promises that growth and life-change are attainable and each new day is an opportunity to grow in our quest of becoming our truest and freest selves in Christ.

At Cedar Ridge there are many opportunities to help you grow in prayer and in your journey in drawing close to God.

  • Prayer is essential to our spiritual life, but contemplative prayer in particular can help us into a deep awareness of the presence and love of God.
