Farm

Sunday, March 14th is our next Farm meeting from 12:30-2:30pm after second service in room 105. All are welcome to listen in on our 2010 planning process or actively participate. We are nearly complete our Spring Planting list. So far we have a nice combination of:

head lettuce, spinach, radishes, carrots, peas and a few other veggies.

How we started:

After much prayer, research and reflection, the church approved a plan in 2008 to devote a substantial part of the property to growing organic fruits and vegetables for the needy in our region.

Like our church vision, the farm vision of Cedar Ridge Community Church is three-fold – we seek to grow spiritually, nurture healthy community and humbly serve in a way that cherishes the earth and its inhabitants. We feel that farming part of our sixty three acres will help us grow – quite literally – in each of these areas. What better way to grow together than by working the soil to produce wholesome food for our neighbors in need? We hope that by farming sustainably, we can reduce our environmental footprint and provide healthy food for hungry people. In the busy Washington-Baltimore area, a farm surrounded by acres of unspoiled land provides a peaceful retreat and an outdoor classroom to educate people about sustainability and the benefits of local food production.

"The Cedar Ridge Farm Mission is to nurture a community of hope and spiritual transformation that serves God and our neighbors by growing wholesome fruits and vegetables in an environmentally responsible way and sharing them with those in need."

2009 Growing Season

2009 is our first year to farm. We broke ground on March 29th, 2009 and by mid May had our first seeds planted. With the abundance of rain, we were blessed to have healthy plants through the middle of summer. Now we are learning more about bugs and organic methods to help keep our plants healthy through more dry and bug infested conditions. But overall our first year has been a blessing and success as we have grown and given away more than 1,000 pounds of produce in our half acre fenced area. We have also had close to 200 people work, serve, enjoy our farm by participating in its care and production. We are all farmers! Enjoy some images of our first fruits of labor: » Read more
